New Years Eve in Dubrovnik

Many people see Dubrovnik as a summer destination. However, if you ever get the chance, visit Dubrovnik during the holidays. For two weeks, the city comes alive with festivities and parties that start the week before Christmas. New Year’s in Dubrovnik is unlike any other. Thousands of people fill the Stradun (main street) in Old Town Dubrovnik to ring in the New Year. Every year a famous Croatian singer comes out to perform a concert, and this year is no different. Jelena Rozga, one of the most famous singers in Croatia, will be performing in the Old City. It is sure to be a great concert as the people drink, dance, laugh and wait for midnight. The bars are full of people and the party lasts until the early morning hours of January 1st. It really is the place to be for the New Year and always promises a great time.

Dubrovnik Tram

The tram that takes people up from Old Town Dubrovnik to the top of of the mountain Srd was renovated and re-opened last year. The tram had been a major attraction before the war in Dubrovnik in 1991 and now finally guests are once again able to take the ride up the mountain and experience the spectacular view of the Old Town Dubrovnik and and the islands and the sea. There is a museum up on top that is housed in the old castle that was built by French in the 1800s. It now tells the story of the war in 1991. Also, there is a nice new restaurant and cafe where now food and and beverages are served. The restaurant is set to open in a few days and will be serving food outside on the terrace. It is well worth the price of a ticket to take the tram up to enjoy the beautiful view of all of Dubrovnik.

Weekly flights from Chicago to Zagreb are schduled to begin in June and run through September. This will be the first time in 20 years that there have been flights from America to Croatia. Since there are many daily flights from Zagreb to Dubrovnik, this will allow American passangers more travel choices to Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik night life

If you are one of the many people that love to explore the night life of different places, you will love Dubrovnik’s night life. While there are many bars to choose from outside the old city, Old Town Dubrovnik is really the place to be. Walking down the Stradun in the Old city, all you have to do is turn down one of the many allies and you will find a great bar to have a good drink. Some of my favorite bars to go to in Old town are the “Irish Pub”, “Casablanca”, and “Hemingway”. The “Irish Pub” is a great bar to go to meet other travelers. It’s hard not to get into a conversation with someone while you’re at the pub. Casablanca is more of a locals bar with louder music, but always a good time. Hemingway is a cocktail bar and the drinks can be a little pricey, but the atmosphere is fantastic and they never seem to disappoint. These are just some of hundreds of bars that are around the Old City and if you walk around you are sure to find a great bar.

Most of the bars stay open until about three o’clock in the morning, but if you aren’t ready to go home just yet, take a walk right outside the Old City and make your way to “El Capitano” or “Fuego”. These clubs stay open until about six o’clock in the morning and they are great choices if you are looking for some more late night partying.

During the week, you will find the bars are not that crowded and you can get around pretty easily, but on the weekend the locals go out and the bars can become very crowded. Don’t be surprised if you look up an ally way and see hundreds of people packed in the bars and allies.

If you are looking for something more low key, especially on the weekends, you might want to find some place outside of Old Town. There are so many places to choose from its impossible not to have a good time!

Imagine being in the mid evil times and roaming the old cobble stone streets of a beautiful and enchanting city. A city surrounded by a sea so clear and blue you can see the bottom. The sky is clear and the breeze is calm and soothing; you have no choice but to be relaxed and at ease. Bright orange roofs of buildings peak out between the massive walls that surround them. The friendly town’s people and merchants line the streets, putting on display the city’s rich and vibrant culture. There is no need to imagine a place like this because it truly does exist. This wonderful place is called Dubrovnik which is located in the southern part of Croatia. When looking for a place to vacation look no further, Dubrovnik is the paradise you have been waiting for.

Dubrovnik is a city that is surrounded by a large gray wall built from rectangular stone blocks. This wall is around 80 feet high and 6360 feet long overlooks the Adriatic Sea. The salty blue sea sparkles in the sunlight and clashes gently against the wall. The people of the town are reminded about the warmth the sea brings with every sizzling splash. Sailboats are carried to the ports of Dubrovnik by the cool summer wind with people on board ready to explore the amazing city and nearby islands of Dubrovnik.

The beautiful city of Dubrovnik will astonish any tourist who comes to explore it. There isn’t a chance that anyone can pass on an opportunity to feel the warmth of the blue Adriatic Sea or explore the cobble stone streets of Dubrovnik. This is the city of romance and relaxing environment with beautiful scenery. It is truly the paradise that everyone is looking for.

Driving in Dubrovnik

Driving can be very tedious in Dubrovnik. The traffic has become very congested over the last few years. It is projected that in 2011 the traffic congestion will become twice as bad as last year. This is due to the amount of travelers visiting Croatia. People who are not from Dubrovnik or Croatia tend to have a difficult time driving on the windy streets. Parking is also a big problem in the city as there are limited spaces available. It is recommended that travelers not drive into the city if they can avoid it. Dubrovnik is a small city and is easily accessible by foot. If you are looking to venture beyond the Old City, Dubrovnik has a great bus system. You can easily get around the area by foot or by bus.

For those of you who can not avoid driving into the city there is some public parking available to you. A new public garage is available right outside of Old Town Dubrovnik near Pile. There are also some apartments that include parking so be sure to ask about availability when looking for a place to stay. Finally, while driving around Dubrovnik please drive carefully and be cognizant of the laws. If you are stopped by the police, you will have to pay the fee to police right up front and they do not take credit cards.

Croatian President Ivo Josipovic is currently attending a conference in New York organized by former President Bill Clinton. It is a possibility that the former U.S. president will visit Dubrovnik this April. A group off American investors will participate in a business forum to commerate the death of Clinton’s first Secretary of State, Ron Brown, fifteen years ago.

Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State to President Obama, signed an open Skies Agreement last week with Croatia. This will allow direct flights between America and Croatia and will lead to an increased flow of tourism between the two countries.
